Obituary for Romaine Borchers

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Wallingford Lutheran Church in Wallingford, Iowa.

Romaine Clifford Borchers was born on August 12, 1929 to Ralph & Kathryn (Lippert) Borchers. He passed away due to a sudden illness on December 27, 2017 while surrounded by family at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa.

Romaine was born and raised on the family farm southwest of Wallingford, Iowa. He graduated from Estherville High School in 1947 and entered the United States Army in 1951. He was stationed in Germany for three years as a radio operator with the 7th Corps. On November 10, 1957, Romaine married Joyce Olson at Wallingford Lutheran Church. Romaine and Joyce farmed and raised their children, Joleen & Craig, on the family farm. They moved to Wallingford in 1995 and Romaine continued to help on the farm until 2013.

In 2014, Romaine celebrated his 85th birthday at the Iowa State Fair where he accepted the Century Farm Award with his entire family. That next spring, he and his son, Craig, went on the Brushy Creek Honor Flight to Washington D.C. and he raved about the trip for weeks. Throughout his life, Romaine was very active in the community serving on the Emmet County Fair Board, Wallingford Co-op Elevator Board and as member of the Wallingford American Legion and VFW. He was also an active member of Wallingford Lutheran Church serving on the church council and fulfilling other various duties. Additionally, he enjoyed woodworking, collecting John Deere toy tractors, working on jigsaw puzzles and spending time with his family.

Romaine is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joyce; and their children, Joleen (Terry) Hessman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Craig (Sheila) Borchers of Wallingford, Iowa; and four grandchildren Erika Hessman (Sioux Falls), Jenny (Cameron) Brooks (Princeton, NJ), Ben Borchers (Wallingford) and Blake Borchers (Wallingford). He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Brady, of Bedford, Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Roger; his parents; father and mother in law, Clarence & Clara Olson; brother in law, Robert Brady; and brother and sister in law, Arnie & Jean Olson.
