Obituary for Alvin "Butch" Behrens

Alvin "Butch" Behrens
Alvin George "Butch" Behrens, the son of Herman and Tena (Heronemus) Behrens was born on July 14, 1919 northwest of Sibley, Iowa in Osceola County. His father was born in the same bedroom of that homestead. Butch passed away at his home in Estherville on January 18, 2018 at the age of 98 years.
He graduated from Drown School #1 and farmed until joining the US Army during WWII achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. From the Army, his next challenge was attending and graduating from mechanic school in Minneapolis, MN. With his entire youth and early adulthood spent in farming the natural talent for mechanics, it was the perfect transition to farm implement repair. After working in various shops, he secured a position with New Holland Farm Machinery as a Factory Service Representative retiring in 1981.
On January 18, 1948, Butch married Arlene Tangeman. Arlene passed away on September 29, 2017.
After retiring, Butch enjoyed service as Chaplain of American Legion Post 91, Trustee and special projects volunteer of VFW Post 3388, delivering Meals-On-Wheels for Redeemer Lutheran Church as well as volunteering with numerous clubs and organizations including teaching Sunday school.
Butch never lost the appreciation and love of farming and the miracle of crop growth. He found so much joy in observing the growth patterns of corn and soy beans even estimating the crop yields to come at harvest time.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Ronald Behrens of Palm Springs, California, Marilyn Ross of Tucson, Arizona, Kenneth (Margi) Behrens of Milford, Iowa, Scott (Julie) Behrens of Spencer, Iowa; grandchildren, Penny (Brett) Meutzel, Brian Behrens, Travis (Erica ) Ross, Joyce (Clint) Siskow, Adam (Cindy) Behrens, Denise Jarrott, Eric Behrens, Matthew Behrens; great-grandchildren, Layla Siskow, Asher Siskow; and sisters, Irene Groote and Verdella Igou.
Butch has been preceded in death by his parents, his wife Arlene, and brothers Bennet "Ben" Behrens and Robert Behrens.
